B.F. took some courses at a Junior College in Bankston, Alabama. After spending time in the Merchant Marine and traveling the world as a young man, he served in the Marine Corps from 1921 to 1925. He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration from 1929 to 1996. He became a Minister in the Assembly of God and rose to the rank of Bishop. When we met him in 1992 he was the Pastor of a small congregation in Bankston, Alabama.
B. F. painted on canvas, gourds and mailboxes which he bought from government surplus. He painted many patriotic pieces and wrote patriotic statements on his work.

His themes also included King Tut and biblical stories. His work is colorful, and his patriotic red, white and blue are prevalent in his art. He traveled extensively, met other self-taught artists, and exchanged artwork with them.
