
Arning was a lifelong resident in Texas, residing in Austin in the later part of his life. In this mid-twenties he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In 1928 he was committed to the state hospital in Austin. He was release for a year but spend 1934 to 1964 in the hospital. He went to a nursing home in 1964 and started drawing and stopped in 1973 when release from the home.
Arning got his inspiration from magazine advertisements, creating his individual interpretations. Arning was supplied with paper and began drawing with crayons. Later changing to cray-pas, he produced about 2000 works.
