A.J. is a non practicing lawyer and was a part owner of the folk art gallery at Barrister’s on Royal Street.  A.J. Is flamboyant and was an early dealer promoting the works of Outsider artists such as Mary t. smith, Herbert singleton, and Reginald Mitchell.

A.J. cuts out colorful obituaries from the times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans and attaches a copy of it to the back of the board. He paints the story of the person’s life on the wooden panel.  A.J. refers to this art as “funerary.”

When A.J. began to produce his obituaries controversy rose because he was a dealer and obviously sophisticated in business matters.  A.J. is self-taught and collectors overcame theirs bias because his work was so pleasing.
